No less than 64 Fatally Wounded in Rio's Most Extensive Police Raid on Gangs
No less than 64 civilians lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's records.
Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials stated. Over 80 people were taken into custody.
Fierce clashes commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday morning. The Comando Vermelho reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities said.
The UN Human Rights Office expressed being "appalled" by the police operation, urging "prompt and effective investigations".
Mission Consequences
The area of favelas adjacent to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the headquarters of a major organised crime groups.
State officials said at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".
Many residents were wounded, including innocent bystanders trapped in shooting.
Local Reaction
Residents have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.
Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

The criminal network has been growing their influence in the area, increasing drug trafficking routes and power in the informal settlements.
Local law enforcement reported over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were captured in the raid, along with multiple guns.

The joint operation by civil and military police follows a twelve-month inquiry.
Dozens of the suspects are thought to be members of a faction from the northern region who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.
